Hi guys! Happy to be here! You can call me Fifi, and I had my first chicken (Orpington) at age 16. I wasn't able to take care of her well, so I ended up giving her to my uncle. Now that I am 33, I feel like I'm ready to be a more responsible chicken owner (I have an Orpington again). Aside from eggs, I love my chicky because she's great with my kids. I joined this forum because I'm really hoping to grow a small flock in my backyard. :)

What are your best tips for a newbie like me?

Everyone above beat me to it, I read everything I could on different breeds when I first started out, that way I could make informed decisions. Now I have 4 hatches behind me and love every minute of it. It helps me decompress from a stressful day to come home and see my two leghorns pacing back and forth, as if to say, hurry up, open the gate already. Good luck with your birds and welcome home to BYC.

Hello, Fifi, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I would get just one additional bird at this point so that your BO at least has some company. Then build a much larger coop and run to accommodate at least 50% more chickens than you think you'll want. If you are limited on the number of chickens due to ordinances, I'd still go larger. Then get the additional birds you want either as adults or day old chicks.

If day old chicks, I would raise them in a brooding area within the coop using a MHP or a brooder plate where the adults can see them. When they are about 4 weeks old, open a small door that is large enough for the chicks to pass through but the adults can't and they will start to integrate themselves into the adult flock themselves.
Good luck.
