Hi, I'm new here, my name is Potok from NY. I have been reading threads before introducing myself... aka pecking around. I have four ladies left that have not been laying throughout Summer and still not. So chicken math it is. My friend Alex is going to take our four ladies for his freezer, which is always great. I want eight more, hopefully I'm not pushing my luck with my wife. I love doing the chick thing, but I can't do them in the basement like we once have, so it would have to be in the coop but it somewhat scares me with the hot lamp. Any suggestions? And/or where can I find some properly sexed chicks?
Thanks a bunch!

Hi Potok and welcome to BYC. You have a few options when it comes to raising chicks outdoors. A brooder plate, such as those made by Premier and Brinsea do the job very nicely. There's also a "mama heating pad" - https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...er-picture-heavy-update.956958/#post-14882145 as well as "woolly hen" -

Here are some general links on raising chicks.

Any questions that you may have regarding your chicks will be best posted here - http://www.backyardchickens.com/f/11/raising-baby-chicks

I don't live in the States, so i am unable to help you in terms of pointing you to the best sources of chicks.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

All the best

hi, seeing as it's getting to be winter, why not just go on craigslist and look for some pullets? that way they will have feathers and not need the lamp. yeah they are not as cute, but not as much work either. Andy they will be laying sooner.
