My name is Aaron. I used to have chickens on my parents mini farm when I was young. I don’t have chickens now but I’m planning on getting at least 6 in the early spring. Still in the process out getting set up in my new home. My family (wife and 2 boys) just purchased 1/2 an acre in a subdivision in Midlothian,Va with (thank the lord) NO HOA!!!! Going to try and have our coop and run set up by mid February so we’ll be ready for some chicks. Looking for suggestions on what the best, easily obtainable, egg layers are. Brown or white eggs don’t matter. Looking forward to spending some time on BYC and relearning about chickens. Wow! It’s been over 25 years since I’ve owned chicken. My family and I are excited for this adventure. See y’all around.

I just wanted to say hi from one newbie to the next.
Discover the search engine but be very careful... you can find every answer for a question you might have, but watch for the black hole that sucks you in for hours because you can’t stop reading! Enjoy your new found freedom and here is to the farm you have long envisioned!

What an egg-citing new adventure for you and your family!!

No HOA is awesome! You should be able to find quality chicks at your local feed stores... not breeding quality, just good for egg laying though. I love having a mixed flock. Makes for a pretty egg basket too, and fun for the kids.
Good friendly ones to start with: Buff Orpington, Australorp, Wyandotte, Barred Rock and Easter Egger -- sometimes labeled Ameraucana... they have cute puffy cheeks and lay green eggs. Also silkies -not the best egg layers but are super sweet and fluffy, great for children. Leghorns and productions varieties are great egg layers, but can be flighty and aggressive. Everyone has their own opinion of best breed, and each chicken has their own personality so all will vary somewhat. Just my two cents.
