Hello everyone

Welcome Koko since you been spying on us so long you know their is lots of help here.
It sounds to me like you have some abandoned chickens. Its possible they are older and you may not get many eggs from them.
On the other hand build a small coop and get a few hens! sounds Like your landlord won't mind. 4 hens should keep you in eggs unless you eat a lot of them.

Thank you bald rooster. My landlord might not mind, but I'm learning that my daughter hates the idea. Oh well... it's possible that I might still do it, no matter her opinion. And oh! I have since looked them up and they are Rhode Island Reds!

Yeah, thanks for your advice and vote of confidence, DobieLover. I'm sure I would enjoy it having them stay. I get such a kick going outside to my car or walking my dog when the chickens start following me all around the yard. My dog could care less about them and so she doesn't chase them... and I end up feeling guilty when I have nothing for them (usually clean my parrot cages just once a week). Although I do have a "worm condo" for composting, so they would probably like the worms on occasion.

Welcome! I know there are lots of feral chickens in FL, so perhaps the birds visiting your yard are, as well. If you get a coop, they may lay inside of it, or you could start with new chicks, as your sourland suggested. I hope it works out for you, and I hope you enjoy being a member of BYC. The forums are always open to help.

Thanks for the welcome to BYC. I'm thinking of going on a careful walk to spy on the neighbor's back yards around the block to see if any of them have coops in the backyard. I'll have to try to be stealth-like without getting caught or looking like a fool. I know they don't belong to the people on either side of me or behind our single-family house were we rent, so... just want to try and find out if someone else owns them or not. If I take the time/energy/money to build a little coop, I don't want someone coming by to yell at me saying I stole their chickens!

That is a good idea. I have a feeling they are wild, especially if they are game type chickens, but it is good to be sure.

AND you have a chicken friendly dog too?? They have chosen you. This is meant to be!
If those were my chickens, I'd have collected them by the first night they went missing. All mine are accounted for nightly. It sounds like these chickens are either ferals or someone doesn't give a hoot about their birds.
