Hello all and so great to be here with friends of chickens and so excited to learn more about my new feathered friends.

I am brand new to owning chickens. I got started yesterday May 8, 2025 with 9 hopefully hens.

What Breeds I have, some are still a bit of a mystery and that's how I found this group by trying to identify.
I have them all narrowed down to 2-3 breeds. I know for sure...I think I have 1 black sex-link. So many look very similar at this young age.

My favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens, well this may change but on day two of owning these girls, it's just such a pleasure to go and see them and watch their behaviors and personality as well as learning about them. I love petting and getting to know them. I know I will also love once we are getting our own eggs.

Some of my other hobbies are gardening (vegetable, herbs, flowers), growing mushrooms such as lions mane, different oyster mushrooms, Shiitake, Cordyceps, Enoki, and experimenting with Turkey Tail and Reishi mushrooms. Biking, Photography, painting, reading and researching all things health, farming and gardening related.

I live with my husband and our 4 toy poodles. We both have adult children 11 total and 2 grand kids so far, hence the name "Byrdie"-my name for grandma. I was a Registered Nurse until 2021 and now I'm a Hobby Farmer I would say. We are also considering meat chickens but wanted to focus on our hens first.

I found BYC a few weeks ago when I was narrowing down which chicks I wanted to get to start our flock. Yesterday I ran across again when trying to identify the chicks I was purchasing since they were in a mix lot. I joined to learn more from others and have chicken friends online and to bounce things off of other people with chickens.

Nice to meet you all and I'm looking forward to learning from you and hopefully contributing to all of you as well at some point.
