My entry into the backyard chicken keeping world is an odd one! A year ago, a stray hen started roosting in our trees. When no one in the area claimed her, and she hadn't left after a week, I bought her some food. After another week, it was clear she had decided we were her people!

How many chickens do you have right now?
Three hens and four chicks

What breeds do you have?
Our mystery hen Ruth (ISA brown?)
Minerva, Black Australorp
Fiona, Easter egger
Four brand new fluffbutts, not yet named:
Black Copper Marans
Cream Legbar
Ameraucana
Buff Orpington

What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Their unique personalities, funny antics, and of course, eggs!

What are some of your other hobbies?
I work in childcare with a Montessori/RIE background. I LOVE dogs and dog training. I'm fascinated by anthrozoology, microbiology, all things nerd. I'm also a former art major that still dabbles. I own too many books and houseplants, wouldn't have it any other way.

I joined BYC to become a better chicken mom and learn as much as I can about egg color genetics. I hope to begin selling eggs at my local farmer's market next spring!

:welcome :frow Sometimes they pick you and capture your heart. Each is certainly an individual. I sell most of my eggs. I have a cooler and sell them at our farm on the honor system. When I first started I put some signs on the main road and others along the route to the farm. At first hubby said no one will come, but they did and we have many regular customers now. At least the egg money feeds the birds. Good luck and have fun...

Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us. These links on egg-colour genetics I found very helpful:

This is a useful link of BYC guides to take a look at announcements-feedback-issues-guides.3 I’d suggest including your location using the guide in that link. You can use this link to contact members in your area - Find your State's thread.

Best wishes

Sometimes the best way to get started with chickens is to jump right in...
Ruthie just gave you a nudge! :lau

Sounds like you've got such a pretty flock that will give you a gorgeous egg basket! I like your hobbies and I also like to draw.... I have some drawings posted in an album here, maybe you could also create one to share? I'd love to see some of your artwork... and I bet others would too! Oh, and some pictures of your beautiful chickens too!

Glad you decided to join, if you ever have any questions, just ask. There's always someone available to help you out. :)
