Thanks so much - I get hooked on how pretty they are and end up buying pretty meat chickens instead of the laying hensYour birds are gorgeous... I have no earthly idea on the scaly skin. @azygous thoughts?
No - I didnt thinknit was an emergency since by every other metric the hen is totally fine and not in distress.View attachment 1509817
Did you start a thread in the emergencies section?

It is fine here--Often you can get a better response in the forum that is closest to your question though because experts hang out there. Incubation specialists on the hatching forum and etc.No - I didnt thinknit was an emergency since by every other metric the hen is totally fine and not in distress.
Is this an appropriate thing to post there?
Wow so thats from sunburn? Shes so densely feathered. Theres the long feathers on top and underneath are a bunch of smaller fluffy feathers....she does lay out in the sun tho - theres less sun now because its rainy season ....I haven't seen that kind of flaking skin since the last time I molted after a bad sunburn. Yes, chickens can get sunburned, but usually it's because they've lost the feathers on their backs. And yes, I have used sunscreen on a naked-back hen who was getting lobster red from exposure to the sun. It worked splendidly.
That pretty "hen" is a cockerel. No wonder he's crowing.
