Hello from Metro Detroit!!!

Is there a general rule of thumb for sq footage vs how many birds? I plan on building it on stilts in order to utilize space they will be in when not out in the yard.
Nothing better than raising the coop high enough for them to use that space. It makes the coop itself much more secure at night and vastly increases your run space without taking up more yard space.

If you don't mind my asking, whereabouts are you in Metro Detroit. My daughter is in Royal Oak.

Exactly what i was thinking. I've raised the platform 2 feet off the ground to utilize the space underneath. I've decided to do a 5 x 5 foot coop. the area they will be in while locked up should be plenty of space.

I am in Westland, so not too far from your daughter.

Again, thank you all for the warm welcome!

We are glad to have you join us. You can learn a lot here that will make things much smoother for you. Unfortunately I found this site years after I had learned some hard lessons.

One other piece of advice. Make certain you can take the floor of the coop up to get access underneath it. You may find a reason you need to get into the area under the coop. It will be easier from inside the coop than by crawling under it.
