Hi everyone! New here all though I've been using BYC for a while for questions about my birds because it kept popping up on google lol,
I am raising chickens on my own for the first time all though I grew up on a farm till I was 13 so i do have a bit of background in poultry care lol
I've been wanting chickens for a while but i finally bit the bullet in August and Brought home six adorable "pullets" Two Black Jeresy Giants, Two Silver Laced Wyandotte and Two Gold Laces Wyandottes. Everyone seems shocked when I tell them I didnt lose a single one and they are currently going on 6 months old(knock on wood that they stay healthy) for me thought they arent just chickens, their also pets. I love all six of my birds even the two that turned out to be roosters!
My favorite thing to do is go outside and sit with them because their always so intrested in me lol my Jersey Giant rooster Harper even does his mating dance for me 🤣🤣🤣 I'm not sure that's a good thing though.
I'm very excited because this weekend I'm bring home more hens! My boys will be so happy to have enough hens to go around!
I plan to quarantine for a minimum of 30 days even though I know the flock and person I'm getting the hens from, I just know it's not worth the risk to me.
So far I havent gotten any eggs from my Hens, but i also wasnt expecting any until atleast March with how late in the summer i got them!
Anyways lol here's a photo of my current six while waiting to be let out to free range!

Yeah I keep a very close eye on him especially since he's very large lol but honestly he hasn't shown any aggressive tendencies at all, I was 100 prepared to have terrors for roosters because I witnessed it happen to my sisters roo he went from being perfectly sweet to an absolute Terror. I know their only 6 months so I still have some time for their hormones to level out, but I've been picking him up and carrying him anytime he does fo his mate dancing to me because I read carrying them in front of the flock "embarrasses" them and puts them in their place lol. Even to my other roo he not aggressive the most I've seen him do is push him away from the ladies lol but they actually usually work together one guarding the front of the flock and one guarding the back, I find it very fascinating how they work together and I hope it continues when I get my new hens cleared and introduced.

It doesn't. But what it does do is reassure him that you aren't intimidated by him, aren't a threat and won't hurt him. I suggest you offer the head cockerel all the treats and food so he can 'give' it to the hens.
You will find that the boys will become more aggressive in the spring when the hormones start raging. If they have red flush on their legs, look out.
You may also come out one day to bloody injured boys if the submissive cockerel decides he's had enough of that position and makes a move to take the flock.
