Hi everyone, I'm hoping you just the group I need. You see, my father always had all the answers, but he passed on 7 months ago and the questions have piled up. A mojor crisis with my flock over the past few day finally got me in gear to seek out some like minded people/ My immediate issue today is that my chickens have nothing to peck at but dirt. I need something benign to put out for them that they can peck at to keep them occupied. I qoule appreciate input. If I need to post this elsewhere, please direct me. Thanks, Dragon_heart

Sorry to hear of your loss. Dad's are special, I hope you have a lot of good memories of him.

As for things for your birds to peck on, you can give them a wide variety of healthy treats. There's a big list of them in the Learning Center:

I am sorry for the loss of your father.
They're are lots of options to entertain and enrich your flock. Simple things such add a head of cabbage on a string and hung like a tether ball or a milk jug with some holes hung so that pecking at it moves it around and spills small amounts of what's inside, like scratch grains, a pule of lraves/lawn clipings/etc or items like chicken swings, etc

I am sorry about your dad passing away. Mine passed away about 4 years ago and I guess you never do get over it.

As for what they can peck at, a flake of alfalfa hay will give them hours of enjoyment, alfalfa leaves are good for them not to mention the micro seeds that are always in the hay.

You may want to toss some of their feed around to let them scratch around for it.
Dirt is fine...they can look for bugs!

Do you have a dust bathing area? They love that. You can also dump a shovel full of dirt for them to check out for bug/worms.
