Hi Everyone!

My family and I live in Ontario Canada and we are about to get chickens for the first time! We currently live in a more urban spot so we will only have 3-4 chickens. We also have a large vegetable garden as well.

We have ordered buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps chicks! I can’t wait to get them! But I feel like even though I’ve spent hours doing research I still have so much to learn!

Does anyone have any ideas for a brooder that would be able to house the chicks for 6 weeks? Likely 4-6 chicks?

I bought the EcoGlow brooder heat plate and a feeder, water, shavings etc. We just need to sort out the brooder!

I’m really looking forward to learning from (and eventually hopefully contributing!) this community!

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us :ya
You'll want something 3-6 sq ft. Mine is made with corrugated plastic, screwed to a 2x4 frame, but a big tub would likely work for you. You'll want some type of wire top as they'll be flying in about 3 weeks.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

BYC has a Learning Centre and also Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. These two might be of particular interest to you:
Topic/Question of the week - Brooding and supplementing heat for chicks
Topic of the Week - Raising Chicks

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Sorry I'm late saying hello! :)
Great breeds to get, I ordered the same chicks last year :) (only have one black Australorp left though, the others were roos). But my situation is different as I'm in a rural setting. Backyard chicken keeping is certainly on the rise in Ontario which is great!
