I just completed a backyard beehive pizza oven. In Illinois, we have to be mindful of the heaving that occurs during the freeze/thaw cycles, so I excavated down three feet and built it up from there. I have a nice base of field rocks about 3 feet in diameter and the oven was built on fire bricks, layed in sand. I used locally scavenged sand and clay to build the oven. I haven't used it yet, as I just did get it finished. I'm pretty sure it is the coolest thing in our township. My husband is a retired farmer, but we never had livestock until I got my ten chickens this spring. They started laying around the middle of July and I am really enjoying all the eggs and everything you can make with them. If you want to know more about building the kind of oven I built, get the book by Kiko Denzer. It is very informative.
