Hi. My name is Sarah and I am new to the world of backyard chickens.

For four years, my daughter asked for some chickens each Christmas. This year, my parents decided to go ahead and get her some. Now comes the explanation of why.

Emma has been a very active girl, loves climbing trees, going on 6km walks with me and her dog, Milo. Then, in December 2016 she caught influenza a from her friend who was sleeping over.
The influenza has triggered systemic onset idiopathic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. That was diagnosed in August, after multiple surgeries and hospital stays, including one for sepsis after a bone and bone marrow biopsy, in June.

Emma has a lot of pain and now does online schooling. So, to motivate her and see her smile, my mom and dad got her five 3 month old chickens.
They are loving their new home, and Emma is loving them. To see her smile, and to give them feed is amazing.

We have basic knowledge of chicken rearing, but Emma looked after them at school with her class. They would wash them and massage their feet, so she has taught me a bit about chickens.

I would appreciate any advice on raising these sweet little girls, who Emma has named Link, Zelda, Revali, Mipha and Egglatine. The first four are named after Emma's favourite Switch game - The Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild. Egglatine is from a movie she loves called Legend of the Guardians. It's about owls.

We have a dog, Milo, birds Talon, Tiki and Billy, and spiny leaf insects. Emma sells the insects and she has made quite a business out of it :)

We love all animals, and as summer approaches, we are looking forward to watching our chickens mature and grow into fine young ladies.

So, that's our intro. Thanks for a great site.

Hello Sarah and Emma. Welcome to BYC! Sorry to hear about Emma's problems, but hopefully the chickens are helping.

There is tons of info here and very good people to help you on your journey as a new chicken owners. :)

If you want to get the most out of BYC, I suggest you do the following:
  • For general education, spend some time browsing the Articles link above and possibly the Learning Center. You will find excellent information for both newbies and long-time chicken owners there.
  • When you have specific questions, most of the time a quick search will come up with the answers.
  • If you don't find anything useful that way, post your question in an appropriate sub-forum. People here are very helpful and will answer your question even if it has been asked 100 times before.
You might want to subscribe to the Australia thread to chat with other chicken owners from your country.

Enjoy your time here.

Nice to meet you Sarah & Emma - I'm glad things are going well now. I think you would enjoy checking out the "Learning Center." it's the best place to begin a chicken education.

BYC also has "Australia, six states and one funny little Island." thread, where you may find BYC ERS living near you They would be best for advice on what type of coop for the climate, where to get proper chicken feed, etc.

Hope you will enjoy BYC as much as we do. I'm sure Teila(one of our Aussies) will be around later to welcome you also.:frow
