Hello all, very excited to learn from this group. I'd like to introduce myself and hope to know lots more about chicken caring, and in time maybe help out other members as well.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? We've had chickens for 3 years now but not successfully. They're laying consistently, and for 3 chicken generations now many have got eaten by dogs etc.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 1 rooster and 5 hens
(3) What breeds do you have? I'm guessing Brahma breeds, and one black chicken breed
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? The eggs, the meatbirds part whenever we come to that, and the learning, and they 'pet' aspect of it.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Soapmaking and diy things from nature.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share: The chickens are now housed at the learning center (LC) that we're part of. We come to the LC around 9am, and leave around 4 pm, so unfortunately we're not around them a whole lot. We only have a tiny coop house, and they nest and roost in that small coop, which now I've learned is not ideal. The actual chicken caring are being done by our caretaker, the opening in the morning, and the closing of the coop at evenings. I love chickens because I feel that there's a lot of learning opportunities in it. Not to mention being closer to food sources, which I believe is important for young children to see. So I'm here to learn more and make it into a bigger venture. We're planning to care for our chickens better so we can at least supply eggs once in a while to the parents of the children who comes to the LC.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? I just google backyard chicken forum and found you all!
