Why hello there all...obvious newbie (s) right here :D. I'll admit, we're not raising chickens (gasp) but we did just get in some Welsh Harlequins and I have NO CLUE what's going on. My husband has a little bit better grasp on things than me, but only a little. We're looking forward to getting to know y'all and of course bug you with an endless stream of questions (such as how hard was it to get your dog to NOT attack the chicks/ducks).

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Most dogs see chickens and ducks as dinner. And it is not easy to train this out of them. So the best thing you can do is keep your dog on a leash at all times or keep your poultry in a pen.

There are a few articles on training your dog to behave around poultry, but keep in mind, many dogs do not respond to these techniques....

You will also want to stop by our Ducks section for more help, you can share pics, tell stories and talk duck with other duck owners...

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Yes, all dogs see chickens diffently. Some just see them as another living creature while others see them as instant dinner.

Here's a good link about training dogs.

X2 on the duck section. There you'll find lots of other duck owners who will be happy to help.

Again, welcome!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! You've gotten some good links and suggestions above, good luck with your new flock!

Welcome fellow Texan! I agree about the dogs. We had our dogs LONG before chickens and we basically had to build a dog-proof pen for ours.

Hi,

I have two well trained lab hunting dogs. I think I have them leaving the birds alone, now. But I would never trust them. I built a kennel for the dogs and have wrapped the birds in a invisible fence and the dogs wear collars.

I call the collars the dogs electronic brain, they have been told repeatedly to leave the birds alone and seem to be obeying. JJ (my tom) is very friendly and approaches us and the dogs all the time, we have had a few incidents but now they seem to tolerate JJ. The geese wander everywhere around here and they seem to know they are off limits too.

Hopefully your dogs will learn to enjoy the birds....

Welcome to BYC! My wife & I were both raised in Texas. X2 on TwoCrows advice. Unless dogs are raised with chickens from the time they are puppies, they usually only see chickens as dinner. Good luck with your flock.
