Hello, from the Sandhills of Nebraska

Hi Kris! Are you in that part of Nebraska where the cranes migrate?

Welcome, off and on! Glad you are here with us. I have a word of advice for you and everybody:
To prevent being attacked by chickens, do not buy meal worms, and open the bag in front of your birds. I was attacked today by my 30 feathered fiends:mad: And the bag was almost gone afterwards. I hope this advice helps someone.

Hello
I've post on and off on backyard chickens but I don't think I introduced myself. I'm Kris, and I live in the sandhills of Nebraska on a cattle ranch. I work part time in town to support my horse and chicken habit. And I'm owned by a red heeler. I love photography, riding horses, cooking and baking, gardening and chickens.
I had a few silkies, hatched a few shipped eggs in the incubator but I sold all my silkies to a friend. So currently I'm chickenless but not for long. We had chickens growing up on the ranch, and I showed chickens and in 4h, many yrs ago. So even though I'm currently chickenless. I'm working on the coops, making it more secure, and planning on adding a automatic doors and cameras in the future.
I'm interested in rare breeds like the silverrudd blue or Isbar chickens and the cream legbar chickens. But I'm also interested in welsummer, marans, americunas, sage eggers, ice cream bar and olive eggers. Then I seen McMurray has whiting green and blue layers. Okay I have egg envy. I love the blues, greens, olive, grey, chocolate colored eggs. I loved setting eggs in the incubator and hatching chicks. But I want to learn more on genetics.
I love gardening, cooking and baking, riding my horses, and photography. I love hatching eggs. It started out by a neighbor saying that incubating and hatching shipped eggs was complicated and never successful. So I wanted to prove her wrong, and ordered shipped eggs. First attempt was a failure, but I learned that having eggs shipped from neighboring states was a success and I was hooked.
I'm planning on ordering chicks soon and having them shipped this summer. Then next year hatching some eggs in the incubator. But I'm not sure I can wait that long so more than likely I'll cave in and order eggs for this spring.
I will be in the Hastings/GI area as of this summer and wondering if you have found any local people to buy eggs or chicks from? I’m interested in some of the same breeds as well as others. Cheers!

No I haven't so I bought some chicks from a gal in Missouri, they're Isbar or silverudd blue and some cream legbars.
