Hello from Vancouver

No preference yet - other than "nice" as I'm sure my kids will see them as pets first, layers second :)

Standard sized breeds that have a well deserved reputation as being friendly, calm, gentle, and great with children and beginners include Australorps, Orpingtons, Cochins, Brahmas, and Sussex. My children made lap pets of all of these breeds. If eggs are a priority, Australorps are the best layers on this list, and Cochins are the poorest layers (although they are the best brooders and mothers).

I am about four hours from Vancouver. I agree with Michael's list about the best breeds, my preference will always be Orpingtons though. I might stay away from the Cochins with their feather feet depending on how much mud you get. If you have the ability to get birds from a breeder not a hatchery you will probably have a better time getting the personality you wan.

Sorry about rambling
Alyssa
