Hi Wendy,

I am another new Aussie here and have had my girls for justa bout 5 weeks. Mine are spoilt too and vastly prefer things like watermeon, tomato and strawberries over things like brocolli - but the are keen devourers of silverbeet and dandelion leaves and bokchoy (this is great, I buy the somehat wilted stuff from the grocer at 99cents a big bag). I have also found that if I keep hold of the lettuce/bok choy etc they are much more likely to eat it than if I just put it on the ground for them, I think they like the resistance as it makes it easier to snap off a bit instead of wrestling with a piece that is too big.

How are your girls coping with this horrible heat wave?

I might try the bok choy, they surprised me today and ate zucchini. Today was dreadfully hot here it hit 41c (105f) and it is still 34 in the house as I type.. My girls don't do the heat well, drooping wings, open beaks - so they got a misting with the garden hose every couple of hours, I used the hose and wet the grass and shrubs where they hang out, they also gobbled down, cold watermelon, zucchini's and seedless grapes. I opened up the coop late afternoon to try and let some of the heat out so fingers crossed they will be ok, till the cool change comes in. I probably fussed to much but I would be upset if they keeled over from over heating.. What part of Victoria are you in?

I'm down in Melbourne in the somewhat outer northern suburbs. It was still over 34C at 1am on Friday night and the chooks were not impressed at all. I ended up booting mine out of the coop (which just wouldn't cool down) into their run for the night and that seemed to help as at least there was more air moving around, and cooler dirt to lie on.
