Hello I am new to BYC. I plan to get chickens

:welcome

Most people that keep poultry have predators around (including family pets such as dogs)...it's a matter of figuring out how to deter them.

You have some good links from Teila and good tips from the other greeters so I'll just say hello and always feel free to ask questions!

Hi Jessica and welcome to BYC:frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya

No question: You can do it!:yesss: In addition to hardware cloth, electric netting is wonderful for four legged critters.

Hi, Jessica, welcome to BYC. Study coop and pen construction forums, and read anything on electric fencing. Constructed and protected properly, one can safely raise chickens. Good luck.

Hey Jessica! Don't let the "what if's" deter you from realizing your dreams. Predators are a given. We simply have to be smarter than them, and use more resources than they have at their disposal. A well built coop and run are a must. Always build bigger than you think you need, using this generally recommended guideline: minimum of 4 s.f. in coop and 10 s.f. in run per bird.
