I recently took the plunge into raising chickens. After several months of contemplating I let my impulsiveness take over.
I wasn’t intending to obtain my chicks from anything but a qualified hatchery but I did the newby thing and was suckered into buying my chicks at the local feed store. They are straight line so undoubtedly I am going to have at least one Roo. I don’t want any Roosters.
They were two weeks old at the time. They are now 5 weeks old, 4 weeks old and two weeks old. I have a total of 7 chicks. I was only going to have one or three chicks but I initially bought 5. As they aged and a least one original is going to be a Roo, I went back and got two more. Chicken math right? I needed one to replace the suspected rooster but picked up two..?
So my girls are supposed to be a Cochin, a Buff Orpington, a Rhode Island Red, A Cuckoo Maran, a Barred Rock and two Ameraucanas. One of these two is probably a rooster.
Here are some pics. Please point out if you thing some of these don’t look like what they are supposed to be. I realize I took a big gamble buying them local and from a backyard breeder. I really just wanted pets with some eggs.
The Cochin is the only one I know for sure because of the furry feet.
Anyway thanks for letting me join. I look forward to learning a lot from this site.

Right now I have a store bought coop but it is only a temporary coop. I am trying to figure out what type of coop I want to invest in for my girls. Then I will try to build it but I don’t think that will be before fall. Good to know about the contest.
