Hello! Welcome to BYC!! :frow Darn auto-incorrect! You're right, chicken wire isn't predator proof. Good for keeping chickens in, but not keeping hungry critters out. Helps to have dual protection, maybe a layer of welded wire over the top of the chicken wire. The white stuff you see on your FF is mold, but not that bad kind, as far as I know. Give it a good stir every day and it'll mix right in. Green mold is no good.

Thanks for introducing yourself!

I have been here off and on. I don't think I ever posted. I was here several years ago and then we didn't have chickens anymore. We have two Guinea Fowl and dogs and cats too. We live on 10 acres in North Florida. Our chickens are not free range because I would have to clip wings to keep the chickens from flying over the fence. We have lost birds to neighbors dogs. They have a decent size coop and a perch and they get sunshine and plenty of air circulation. Their pen is made of cattle panels and covered with heavy plastic on the outside and chicken wire on the inside. I am rethinking their safety though. Chicken wire is not really predator safe. I have started to feed our chickens fermented food. I am a little nervous about mold issues though. Honestly, the white stuff looks similar to mold to me and the smell can get nasty. I suppose the mold would be green and very recognizable. I appreciate this place very much. :thumbsup
