1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
• We have been raising button (king) quail and Coturnix quail for about a year and a half now! They’re lovely creatures and it’s become a hobby, they are our children!

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
• Currently have 7 quail total

(3) What breeds do you have?
• We have 3 button (King) Quail, and 4 Coturnix (3 lovely hens & 1 male)

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
• Their different personalities are so fun to watch as they get older! Especially our current ones, we have raised them all from babies, incubated them all on our own (except 2 which we purchased) and we have helped hatch many from their eggs who needed some extra help! one of our biggest Coturnix hen was one we carefully helped get out of her egg.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
• Some of our current hobbies are painting, and plants and gardening!

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
• Besides our lovely button quails and coturnix, we have 2 Baja California Tree frogs (right over 2 years old) and a sweet female Red Tail Boa!

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
• We found out about BYC when we first started hatching, around march-april of 2024. We are always looking to seek answers for any questions we have had, and also illnesses that unfortunately turned out to be coccidiosis from our last batch of buttons we raised.
We currently have a sweet Coturnix Hen who has lost the use of her legs and are seeking some answers to see if anyone else had gone through this. We originally thought it was from molting from doing research, because we read that they can sometimes have problems getting around while molting, but within the last week or so it has gotten worse. We contacted an online vet who prescribed her .2 ml of Metacam (Meloxicam oral suspension for inflammation of her legs/joints.) Her nails are red as well. She has been swimming through the sand to get around and we just started this medication yesterday night, tonight being her 2nd dose. so far no side effects. we are also giving her Epsom Salt baths for 5-10 min a night.

Unfortunately It wouldn’t let me post videos. She will flail around the sand like she is swimming through it. I added some water near her favorite spot which is in the corner of their hutch, next to the food. She has the will to live and has energy. She can get herself to her water bowl near her but can’t get across the cage. If anyone has experienced any of these symptoms please help!!! We will do anything for her, her name is Baldy. She is the sweetest bird. Another thing to note is she had loss of feathers on her belly.

We will do anything for her, her name is Baldy. She is the sweetest bird. Another thing to note is she does have loss of feathers on her belly. Initially, we thought she was molting (she was 7 months old when we got her), and we had researched and it says that during molting they MAY have some feather loss and trouble getting around due to the uncomfortable symptoms that come with molting. To add some more context to her unknown condition, the online vet we contacted said it could be anything from joint issues, neurological issues, or something else. we may have to take her in to see a vet but no vet in our area sees quail, they see other birds but no one will see Quail. There is a vet in Los angeles that will see quail, we took our snake there for a checkup a couple years ago so that will be the next step if she doesn’t seem better after her 14 days of the medication our online vet prescribed. She is one of the 2 coturnix we purchased (her and our one male) she was perfectly fine until a few months back. forgot to add that. none of our other birds have any issues of the sort and are healthy. she is also still laying.
Anything helps, please reach out if you have experienced this with any of your Quail. We are desperate for answers and will appreciate any feedback or advice. Thank you!!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow

To post videos, you can either post them to YouTube, make shareable, then copy/paste the link here, or the same thing in our gallery, tab above.

You could post this in our Quail Forum, but I'd give her some B-complex. She could have 1/4 of a human pill per day. You could also get some Poultry Cell vitamins and put that in their water every other day, in case there's a vitamin deficiency going on.

We're glad you're here though and hope she gets well!

thank you for the advice on the youtube posting, i didn’t even think about that! will upload the video tomorrow! and or course thanks for your input on giving her poultry call vitamins, we have probiotics to mix in the water but we can try that as well. again thanks so much for responding, will follow up with a video of how she is moving (trying) around :( it’s so sad to watch but will post on youtube and post the link asap! will also try the B-Complex pill. would we crush it up in water and give to give to her in a feeding syringe like the meds she is on? or what is your advice on how to administer the pill?
