1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
• We have been raising button (king) quail and Coturnix quail for about a year and a half now! They’re lovely creatures and it’s become a hobby, they are our children!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
• Currently have 7 quail total
(3) What breeds do you have?
• We have 3 button (King) Quail, and 4 Coturnix (3 lovely hens & 1 male)
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
• Their different personalities are so fun to watch as they get older! Especially our current ones, we have raised them all from babies, incubated them all on our own (except 2 which we purchased) and we have helped hatch many from their eggs who needed some extra help! one of our biggest Coturnix hen was one we carefully helped get out of her egg.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
• Some of our current hobbies are painting, and plants and gardening!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
• Besides our lovely button quails and coturnix, we have 2 Baja California Tree frogs (right over 2 years old) and a sweet female Red Tail Boa!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
• We found out about BYC when we first started hatching, around march-april of 2024. We are always looking to seek answers for any questions we have had, and also illnesses that unfortunately turned out to be coccidiosis from our last batch of buttons we raised.
We currently have a sweet Coturnix Hen who has lost the use of her legs and are seeking some answers to see if anyone else had gone through this. We originally thought it was from molting from doing research, because we read that they can sometimes have problems getting around while molting, but within the last week or so it has gotten worse. We contacted an online vet who prescribed her .2 ml of Metacam (Meloxicam oral suspension for inflammation of her legs/joints.) Her nails are red as well. She has been swimming through the sand to get around and we just started this medication yesterday night, tonight being her 2nd dose. so far no side effects. we are also giving her Epsom Salt baths for 5-10 min a night.
