Hello & Newbie Help

Oh, I'm assuming they have enough fresh air, brooder is not enclosed ? I'm really stumped, never heard of anything like this.

They are inside our two-car garage. The walls of the brooder are 18" tall and we use a sheet of plywood over half of the top to keep the temperature constant. Half of the brooder's top is open. If we don't do that, it gets too cold in the brooder. Do you think that's the problem?

(no, haven't called the hatchery yet; will do that tomorrow. thanks!)

No, that sounds ok.

Just now checked the chicks and the one that was down today is now gasping for breath, and my husband says that it looks like she bled a bit out of her nostrils. Very pale all over.

Yikes.

I'm really sorry this is happening. I really wish I had a good answer to help the chicks.

Aww, thank you for your help; it's nice to know that there is such genuine concern out there.

The little chick passed away a bit ago. This is so bizarre. We're new to chickens, so to have this on top of the newness is a little bit unsettling. Now I'm worried that it's something weird that can pass to people and other animals. <gulp>

I'm so sorry you are going through this! I just read through several pages of common chicken ailments and couldn't find anything that sounded a lot like what you are having happen with your birds :( I hope that maybe its just stress related from shipping and there won't be anymore losses! Good luck!
