Definitely upgrade to 1/2" hardware cloth. Poultry wire only keeps chickens In, doesn't keep predators out. They can slice through it like butter.Sorry for the tragic loss.

Sounds like your chick was one of the few lucky survivors of predator attacks- kudos to her.

The chick made a full recovery.

It was def a hawk as I looked out and seen it standing right outside the spot that had blood on the wire.

Also, yes we know for sure we will give 3 chickens away and probably a few more depending on how many roos we have. We live in the cou try and a distant neighbor has several chickens and some are roosters so I don't believe the re is a problem with having roos..

We plan to probably use pine shavings on the bottom.. maybe thru winter.. also will likely buy an external fence to allow them to roam while were home.

I may take the light out soon.. I believe they are all feathered now anyway. However they will only go into the coop at night if the light is on for them. If we unplug it, they will sleep outside of it and we have to pick them up and put them inside .


Our chicks are getting so big.. I hate even calling them chicks.. They really are just juvenile chickens at this point lol

You've been given good advice so I'll just say welcome... A dark coop is a scary place to go, so light helps with that. A lot of folks will use light to get the girls to go to bed at night. Mine go without heat at 3 weeks old, but I'm down south.
