Hey everyone :) I'm an old member (as I discovered when I tried to register again today lol). And I'm doing my formal intro so I can post some questions in the meat birds threads. My name is Jessica.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I have grown up a hobby/horse farming kid. As soon as my parents bought land we had horses, laying hens, some ducks for a hot second, turkeys, a raven, goats, dogs, cats and pigs! Nothing was ever large scale, and we have enjoyed dabbling. I grew up and bought the farm :) (2 & 3) So now as a mom of two boys with my husband we have 7 Laying hens and a Rooster. One last Rhode Island Red (red leader 2), and Ameracana, three black Auracaunas, A buff Orpington, an easter egger (buff X ameri-mut) and our rooster is the lovely Americauna mix. We have had meat birds (cornish X) in the past but I've always felt it could be more ... easy? less gross? SO I found myself here.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love their personalities, the fact that I'm getting good food from chickens who love their lives.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I am a Farrier, and and essential oil junkie. I love reading anything and self growth is a passion.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We live on a 2.5 acre farm right up beside my parents empty 10 acres of fields and woods. It's a lovely life and I'm so happy to be raising toddlers (4 and 3 year old boys) in this outdoor life.
We live on the North end of Vancouver Island

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D
I'm sure it was a google question about choke in meat birds two years ago. I was having a particularly disastrous flock. (rats, sicknesses, choke... so frustrated).

Glad you finally joined! Your farming homestead sounds lovely! I hope to have a place like that someday and raise our own meat as well. I've heard that Cornish X can be "difficult" and I came across this article a while back that may be helpful for you:
Raising Cornish Cross for Meat- the TRUTH

This other article also has a compassionate approach to raising chickens and processing around children that may be attached to the birds, but your experience might already be more advanced. There is a nice video attached as well:
Pets VS. Livestock & Respectful Chicken Harvest

Hope you enjoy being a part of BYC!
