Hello

My chickens are reds that I ordered from our local feed store. I plan on getting more reds (Great layers, 1 egg a day) and maybe some other breeds from local farmers market or local farmers. Also considering meat birds though I’ve not done any research on them yet. To start out we are looking at getting 2 registered does and a buck for milking and babies and grow from there. Not to concerned about the breed, kinda depends on what is available in our area and so I’ve been watching kijiji and our local feed store bulletin board. I’m sure lots of options will start to pop up as we get closer to spring. A friend of mine raises Nubian goats and I can secure 2 kids from her which would be amazing, just haven’t decided if I want to start with young or older goats. I’m looking forward to talking with other goat farmers and asking lots of questions. I’ve been reading and watching lots of videos on goats too, though I still need to work on my farm animal lingo, lol. I have never raised goats before but grew up with dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, pigs and horses. I think that is super important right now for us to get back to growing our own food and raising our own animals. How many chickens do you have?

Rhode island reds you mean? If so, I have three of those! They're one of my favorite breeds ever. They're such a classic, beautiful bird. Great layers, great temperament, hardy, list goes on. :) That sounds like a good plan for a start, two does and a buck I mean. Good on you for researching! I agree, it is super important in general for us to get back to the basics per say. I have only 11 I believe right now. We've had probably 30 or more in the past, been raising them for years, but this is a good size I think since we don't need all the eggs.

By the way, speaking of goats there's a sister site to this forum if you weren't already aware called BackYardHerds for mostly just livestock. I honestly haven't had a huge amount of luck on there, I ended up leaving recently over conflict and it seems a lot less active than here but still a good place to peruse I'd imagine for some info. Also there's a section here for other pets and livestock.

Also if I may suggest a couple books to consider someday, this first one I swear by. I recommend it lots, my dad got it over a decade ago when we started this farm and we've used it almost exclusively, and none of us excluding my mom had any farm experience before. It's truly amazing and covers almost every animal. It's called "Barnyard in Your Backyard: A Beginner's Guide to Raising Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Goats, Sheep, and Cows". Another book I got for Christmas is Holistic Goat Care. I did a good amount of research before choosing this one and it seems pretty good. It just goes into goats more extensively.
