I would think your biggest obstacles would be giving them enough shade so as to not over heat, offering them natural dirt and scratching areas and keeping them from flying or falling off the rooftop. I am not at all familiar with big cities so I can't offer you much help. With some good planning you could probably make it work. Best wishes!

I'd love to know how you got your pumpkins to grow. I've never got to growing them.

The first year was accidental- my husband bagged the pumpkins from the pumpkin patch we go to and meant to take them out to the street, but forgot, and instead stuck them in a corner and come spring we found a big sprout coming out of the bag. The second time we buried part of a pumpkin with its seeds and added soil from our compost bin, and old hay. Also manure soil. I stayed at a Airbnb goat farm that grew a lot of pumpkins, and they told me “pumpkins love poop!” He would mix his bunny poop with soil and cover it in hay. Good luck!

Chickens are flock creatures and need to have space. The general requirement is 4 sq ft of space per bird in the coop and 12 sq ft of space per bird in the run. They also thrive by being able to scratch around on the soil, sun bathe and they NEED to dust bathe to keep external parasites at bay and keep their skin in good condition. Please consider these needs as you decide on the home you plan to provide them and make sure you keep 3 birds minimum but don't overcrowd them. Also, summer heat without full shade from the sun and circulating air can easily kill them.

Hi! Thanks for all of this! We actually get shade from the neighboring buildings. I was considering a coop like this for them on top of a bed of soil. Would that work?

My thought was to make it a sort of small garden-like space, so grow chicken friendly plants in part of it and leave part of it as dirt. Apologies for my ignorance- what do you mean by “refresh the soil”? What is needed?
