My name is Nancy. I live in Maine. We have many feet of snow. Thinking about raising chickens. Will they survive Maine winters?

Morning Nancy and welcome to BYC!

There are a lot of members here that have very cold winter weather and their chickens do fine. When you choose the breed(s) of birds you want, be sure they are winter hardy, also, smaller combs are less likely to get frostbite in frigid weather. This chart may help you choose the birds right for your area:

You may want to go say hi to the Maine members and find out what they suggest for breeds and how they deal with your weather:

Good luck to you!

NorthFLchick gave you good links. We also have Superchemicalgirl who is very good at enduring the Maine winters - and still has a great sense of humor.

I'm glad you joined our community.

Chickens usually survive in cold weather quite well. The most important thing is keeping them out of drafts, and preventing moisture build up in the coop. If you choose cold hardy breeds with small combs, you'll have even fewer problems.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

The best way to insure your chickens do well in the winter is to be sure you pick cold hardy breeds and build your coop properly. Buff orpingtons, black australorps, sussex, cochins, wyandotte, sex links and easter eggers are all some examples of cold hardy chicken breeds.

Good luck!
