Hi, Maybe I didnt read your message right but there's got to be a rooster in there somewhere. I would say you have six layers and one imposter!

"five laying hens, all hybrids. Despite being told that hybrids don't get broody, one of ours got all maternal and successfully hatched a clutch of four chicks for us in the summer. All girls can you believe??? Two Lavender Leghourns, a Black Orpington and a Cream Legbar, all of whom are now laying too! A fox got two of our girls a couple of months ago so we now have seven layers."

Nope, seven layers. We had five hybrids. Bought in some fertile eggs and successfully hatched four female purebreeds (2x LL, 1x CLB, 1x BO = 4). 5 + 4 = 9. Fox got two of our girls. 9 - 2 = 7

Hope that's cleared it up

Thanks for the very warm welcome everyone

I missed the part about purchasing fertile eggs. How did you know it was a fox? I lost
a hen that got out for less than thirty minutes and when I went to look for her I heard
something run off in the woods but didnt see anything. I did a careful search and turned up
nary a feather. Sigh...
