Help! 12 week Chick can’t breath well...

I have seen some threads here in the past where a chicken died and had a necropsy where aspergillosis was diagnosed. They were the only chicken in the flock with it. But this is just speculation. I hope that she pulls through, but if she doesn’t make it, get a necropsy. That is the best method to get a diagnosis. I would worm her with the SafeGuard for 5 days. If you can get a weight, give 1/4 ml per pound.

Update: the Nocropsy came back. Doctor said she had an infection basically all over. In her air sacs in her brain in her lungs pretty much everywhere. She said it’s nothing that is contagious that we need to worry about the other birds getting. Could have been from some type of fungi or.... of course now that I’m typing this I forgot what else she said it could have been from. But said it’s not any disease that could be passed from bird to bird. still sad we don’t have our sweet girl but also glad to know everyone else is safe. @Eggcessive maybe your suspension were correct. I could have had another culture done to try and find out exactly what caused the infection but would have cost another couple hundred so I passed on it. I was satisfied knowing it’s not a disease of any sort that the other girls would get.....and as of now all the other girls are happy and healthy.

That sounds like aspergillosis from mold. In young chicks it is known as brooder pneumonia. I have heard of some birds being the only one in their flock affected by it, but it can spread all over through the air sacs in an affected chixken. Here is some reading about it:

I bet that is what it was... I forgot to add the vet said she had pneumonia too. Although I guess saying a lung Infection is the same thing. but yes, I think you are dead on. I will read up on it. Thanks for all the info and the link!

@Eggcessive this is the first summer I have ever used misters in my chickens run. I used them when it was close to the 100’s but they did make the run pretty damp. And the these set of chicks were not full adults yet. I wonder if that contributed to this by creating an environment for that mold with the high heat and damp run. They usually free range a lot of the day but I did notice she started getting sick after we got back from a week long trip and they were locked in their run. I had the misters set up on a timer. maybe no more misters in the future or if I do use them not so much to where the ground stays damp. What are your thoughts?

I haven’t used misters, but it is possible that might have been part of the problem. But it would be hard to know for sure. Hopefully, none of the others will become ill. It helps to have good coop ventilation from one end to the other, prevent dust and mold, and add a fan to keep the coop cool.
