I have a 4 week old black Silkie chick that I bought straight run at a day old. I know that they are very hard to sex and usually you’re not 100% sure if it’s a roo or pullet until it either crows or lays an egg BUT I would love your opinions on it! Her name is Birdie! She’s very sweet, loud, always stands up very tall, and is feathering slowly which has led me to believe she’s a he. I’ve just had a feeling it’s a roo and I’m new to the chicken world. The crest still has the down feathers but the middle part is now bald. These are pics of the chick right now at 4 weeks old. What do you guys think just by the pics? I’m hoping it is a pullet so I can keep it! Please let me know! Thanks!

Much to young to tell! Give it more time, however with silkies you sometimes don’t truly know until it either crows or lays an egg!

Also, once it feathers out keep an eye out for streamers or a “slicked back” looking crest as this generally points to a boy, while the girls have much rounder crests.
Thanks! I will keep my eyes out for that!

It’s really just too young to tell... but you could guess by how they hold themselves (high rooster, bending over hen) or the wing growth rate (hens feathers can sometimes grow faster...
