I have a 5 day old Ameracuana that had a poop crusted over butt. I check on them daily when I feed and water them and this wasn't present yesterday. I clean their brooder every other day and the other 4 are fine. I don't understand how this happened or what I can do to prevent it. I picked the poop away with tweezers and warm water (not fun for her or I!) and am hoping this helps. Can anyone tell me If further treatment is needed, what causes this, and if this could be fatal? I greatly appreciate it!

Pasting up can be fairly common for a week to ten days in chicks that were shipped. I just look at their vents once a day--clean them gently with fingers and warm soapy water, and dry thoroughly. Usually it comes from being too cold or too hot in transit, or dehydration. Don't keep brooder temperature too hot, and make sure there is a cooler area to get to. Check the one that had it, because it may happen again. After 10 days, I doubt if you will see it again unless something is wrong.
