HELP! asap!--update with pics

i took her to the emergency animal hospital..the vet there was awesome, she has chickens herself, so while the aide was rolling his eyes at us bringing a chicken in, she was cooing to my hen. they cleaned the wounds, found some wounds i was unaware of. she tried to put the peices together to try and stitch but it was impossible. then she fashioned a cone to put around her neck..which is driving my hen nuts, but so far is affective until i can try something else (thinking of that shirt solution) she put SSD ointment on it, and prescribed a antibiotic. unfortunately our credit card was declined to pay the whole thing so we paid the office visit and left the medicine.

i figure ill try the betadine recommendations on here, neosporin in place of the ssd ointment, and go back with 20 bucks for the antibiotics.

right now our girl is sleeping on our bed in a bunch of towels..i think shes kinda in shock and so far isnt interested in water/food right now..im gunna let her sleep for a bit then try to get her to eat/drink

oh yeah one more question..i saw aspirin for pain..anything else that can be given? is asprin the best thing out for pain relief for chickens?

ok sorry one more question too.. the antibiotics that she wants to give us is clavamox 62.5 but its in tablet form..im supposed to disolve it in water and give it to her that way..but researching the antibiotics, it seems like that particular antibiotic is usually given to chickens in liquid form.. is tablet form okay for chickens?

glad to hear that the vet helped, although the staff doesn't seem to be all that into helping animals, huh? talk about being discriminatory.
hope she wakes up feeling better and that all ends up well!

krackerkim you vet probably didn't have the right dosage for chickens because he doesn't have call for such a product. I hope they did explain well ,that after you dissolve it in water, they gave you the right amount to give your hen at each treatment. I'm sure an avian vet would have had stuff on hand but who know where you can find one of those and they probably charge double.

I wonder if the collar is stressing her too much. I never knew they used them on chickens. Since she is in the house with you and getting lots of attention, I don't think she'd pick at herself very much.
How great of you to take her to a vet. I hope you next postings will be good ones about her.

How is she doing now? This is the lil hen we just ID the breed right? Poor thing.
How are you guys holding up. its always so hard to deal with stuff like this esp with pets out of the "norm"
I hope shes doing better and eating & drinking for you!

yeah thats the one we just id'd. my poor baby:(

ive got her in my bathroom, which is the warmest room in the house, with a heating pad under some towels, inside of a basket so its nice and cozy. i go in with her every hour to make sure she gets her water in her..shes not eating a whole bunch, she is fond of the eggs/shells but i pretty much have to hand feed her, the cone on her head isn't making her too happy, but i tried taking it off of her and she started pecking after a little bit. but i think shes a lot more used to it than she was last night, and we've got our routine down as far as feeding/water. i mixed pedialyte in with the water, and did the aspirin, and shes starting to love the little medicine dropper ive been giving the water to her with. she can manuver the cone to eat and drink but i think shes spoiled. i use a infant medicine dropper and we cuddle and she drinks a lot better with that. and ive been doing the neosporin.

she seems like shes a little better aside from the cone/pecking. shes walking around and hopped up on top of the basket for a while

she did lay an egg..first time i ever saw her lay one right in front of me. it was kinda cool, we were doing our water routine and then she stopped and stood still for a few mins then out came an egg. it was half pale half brown with a light red streak, so not her healthy egg..but i was surprised to even get one
