Help! Baby duck with eye problems...

I read ths last night, couldnt stop thinking about the poor little thing,

is there any improvement ?

Sorry, was away and unable to use internet. Update on duckie.

Fluid continues to build up, so I have to "drain" it every few days or so.. I am using the Vetericyn - but I haven't seen any improvement really.

Some other research indicated that he might have conjunctivitis, so an antibiotic would be indicated, but I haven't been able to get any terramycin eye stuff - local large animal vet doesn't have it, and neither does the local feed store.

I have not heard anything more from the vet on this.

I am wondering about the membrane, which appears to be his third eyelid. He does have eyes behind it, but the eyelid seems to have down feathers on it (?) which is obviously not normal.

He is growing at an alarming rate, and is still eating and drinking well. He is fluffing up with white down, and besides the eyes, still appears to be quite healthy. However, I don't think it will be feasible to keep "draining' his eyes! I can just imagine trying to wrestle with a full grown duck to do this every few days. :O

Still hoping for a solution - Does anyone think that a NFZ Puffer might work? That is the only eye med that I have!

I just read that NFZ Puffer is used to treat pink eye in cattle and other infections but I guess it would be worth a try, You could probably find Terramycin eye ointment on line and maybe a TSC? not sure about TSC. Sounds like maybe a birth defect do you think with the third eye lid with feathers on it? Sure doesn't sound normal. you have been so sweet to try and help him/her. I hope there is still something that can be done. If you could just find an avian vet that would take this on as a favor to an animal in need. for lack of a better word.

My duckie had fluid build up repeatedly for several weeks. I used saline solution 6x a day and vetericyn 3x a day. I also used a powdered antibiotic in his water. I'll see if I still have the package. It didn't mention the treatment of eye infections on the package, but it was what I had on hand...

Give your growing baby some snuggles from me. And yes, it is hard to deal with medical issues in adult ducks. My Clumsy is arthritic and came up lame a few winters ago. She spent six weeks in solitary with her leg wrapped. The only way I could keep the splint on her was to use vetwrap and then a layer of duck tape over it.

I know this post is a bit old, but I too, have a duckling with this problem. We took her to the vet yesterday, and they did a culture, plus cleaned out her eye. The doc to said it was conjunctivitis, but upon looking further, he said it was worse. They gave us prescription eye drops, Neomycin and Polymyxin B Sulfates and Bacitracin Zinc Opthalmic ointment USP. The doc also said that it was her bottom eyelid, that it was going into the cornea as well. He believes that she will most likely need surgery to fix it. Let me tell you, its not cheap taking them to a exotic vet! We had to scrape up to get the full amount owed!

I can only imagine how much surgery will cost. My daughter bought her at the feed store when we went to get our chicken feed. I really didn't want one, but how can you resist, right?

We knew something was wrong when she bought her, that's why she picked her out! I was just hoping it would be something minor, but, no, its not. I'll let you all know if she will need the surgery in the end. Let's hope not, because money is a problem. Other than this problem, she is a very healthy Peking duckling!

@b.hromada I hope the meds clears it up. Bless your dd heart for taking her and giving her a chance. I'd think about getting her a buddy though they do so much better if they have a friend who speaks their language.

Thanks, she is doing a bit better. Her eyes aren't so swollen, but I still don't know for sure. Our family always takes in the "not perfect", if you know what I mean? lol! I also have a brown African Goose. That's why we got the little duck. We used to have other ducks, but they are no longer with us, so we figured our goose, "Snips" would really enjoy a new friend, and not just chickens! Thanks for your well wishes too.
