Help-Berdie my Goose is so Sick

Your best bet is to get him to a vet ASAP. Giving him water incorrectly could be the reason you are seeing water coming out of his nostrils. If not swallowing on their own, water must be given into the crop, which wil require the use of a tube and syringe.

This is a serious emergency, please do your best to get your goose to a vet ASAP.

Thank you to all. Your replies and concern only show your love for these animals. I elected to take Berdie to the vet Friday. I ended up finding a vet that wasn't too far away that actually treated birds. She was a great vet. Cost wasn't crazy either. I get this bird in the vet and he opens his bill and honks. Go figure. Not too much mind ya but he never opened his bill for two days before that.

If I get some of this wrong please bare with me. It appears he has a bacterial infection. I was sure she said he had "crop-stasis". The vet gave Berdie meds to clean out his stomach and antibiotics. Metronidazole and Metoclopromide.

It took three people to get him settled to inspect his throat. They wrapped him up in a blanket like a burrito. That's one feisty fella. Once his mouth was open the smell that came out f his mouth made us all gag. Stink!

Well he has been on the meds two days. He is clearly still sick and can barely walk at times but he has honked at me a few times. he is in the pool right now and flaps his wings a bit. They seem to be drooping which is different. Am I supposed to try to feed him. He won't eat food in the bowl at all.

Felt funny being in the vet with all these dogs and I had a goose. Got some good looks and smiles. I hope we get better each day. I thank you for your advice.

Charles

Yuck, sounds like sour crop. Very glad you caught that! Did they take a look to make sure nothing was causing a blockage and preventing the crop from emptying? Or get his crop emptied out of the rotting food?

They looked in his mouth and in his neck but I can't say they looked in his crop or not. I am so inexperienced here. I do remember her saying that one of the meds would help clean him out.

See if you can find mazuri waterfowl food. It is the most palatable and nutritionally balanced food for geese, it fully dissolves so can pass through crop easier, and it floats on water so you can throw pellets when swimming to encourage eating. FYI, a 50lb bag runs $40-50 each, but my birds have convinced me it is worth the price.

Never heard of mazuri waterfowl food but will surely look into it.

Mr. Berdie is way better today. He is having a hard time walking. Wobbles and falls over but he is more alert and active.

I put some oats and water in a bowl and he mopped it up. Not a lot but at least he is trying to eat. Major improvement. Done that a few times to day. He has been staying in the pool. I think he is relaxing. I am thinking that he is making he way back from the brink. I am thankful.

So good to hear! Takes a bit of time to recover from any illness/issue, just give him time and keep up that good work! :hugs
