My broody seems to abandoning her eggs. She started off with 5 eggs 9/10 days ago. But the last 4/5 days she has been taking more eggs. I marked her eggs yesterday when she went out to egg but when I went to let the chickens out (2 hens and a rooster) who are in the same coop as her. There where 2 eggs abit away from her so when I picked them up I noticed they were one of the marked eggs. She had 8 marked eggs yesterday but she has abandoned 2 and took 2 fresh eggs under her. I will take the fresh eggs from her later but im just concerned that she will abandon more of her eggs for fresh eggs. What will I do to stop her?

Hens don't know one egg from another and they can't count so they will continue to take any fresh eggs laid nearby and tuck them under. They also don't form any special attachment to any particular egg, so if the nest gets too full, some may get pushed out or, later in incubation if she senses that one has gone bad, she will push it away.

This is why I don't let my hens brood in the coop unless I have segregated off a section for them. Giving them their own private area to brood prevents other hens from getting in and laying their eggs, and also protects the chicks once they hatch, from wandering away from their mother and getting lost.

If I can convince a broody hen to move to a broody coop, that is my first preference, but many broodies don't like to move from their chosen spot. So my second choice is to cordon off the corner she is in - sometimes just enclosing the corner with chicken wire, leaving enough room for a feeder and waterer at one end. If neither of those options is possible, I collect all the eggs under her every day, and instead incubate the eggs myself, and put either pipped eggs, or freshly hatched chicks under her.
