First I would like to say hello. Now : help came home today to feed my chickens and ones back has no feathers and is bloody and raw and she is limping.I took her and put her on a Table put iodine all over her raw back smotherered it in trip antibiotic ointment ; then put gauze on it and taped it down with blue duct tape :'( then set her in pen she hopped along but the others were looking for a place to peck on her back; so I took her out put her in a rubbermade tub witch chcicken wire ontop then gave her a dish of water with electrolytes. And she ate about a thumb size peice of bananna. What do i do onownhave i done any thing wrong? Shoule i remove gauze : what about peroxide? I thought that would be cruelty nsine it burns

You did right by keeping her away from the others. I'd keep her away from the others for a while, and keep her inside if at all possible because flies will lay eggs in her raw flesh and maggots will soon hatch out. Keep the wound clean with saline or warm water, and applying antibiotic cream is a great help. No need to cover the area unless the hen herself is pecking at her back. Once the back is healed and pin feathers have formed you can put her back with the flock with a hensaver apron (also called a chicken saddle). If she continues to be picked on you may have to keep her away from the others or rehome her.

Thank you soo very much i was thinking something got in the pen and got at her( this is my first go afound with chickens) i was frantic i will remove the gauze later tonight and wash it again and put more antibiotic on her ; i will try to build her something this weekend to keep her as close to her flock as possiblle in the chickenyard and put her in the hen house but in pet carrier so they are are all still together: and that why for.futcher.moltings wont go wrong like this. cause my roo got as upset as ive ever seen him when i removed her. I wont put back outside tull she is not raw anymore case i hate for her to have problems with flies and their eggs.Can i give her a asprin for the pain? And she is favioring her left leg for some reason.

Thank you all for the warm welcomes and advice. she is such a doll one of my two.easter eggers; my two buff orp were picking her and i think one of my three rir might.of too thought they are useally mellow and friendly. btw I am from North TEXAS

Update: I took off her bandages @ gave her back and fanny a lukewarm bath which she throughly enjoyed but let me know the tender spots; they were little brused so I was extra gental. Then i patted her dry with paper towels and lathered her with antibiotic ointment. She really does have a raw back and rump I then gave her more banana and dried worm thingies.

Next I watched the rest of hens and twohad moulting backs so i fashioned homemede aprons for them and watched them to make sure they could function and they dld fine even went to roost with them. Now RooRoo our only Roo who is a banny roo he counted his hens and could not find the one i have in the house and we had to gonarou d and around to get him in the hen house but he let me know how he felf about it. I sure hope they love her as much upon reentry as they did when going in to roost

Thank you for all the warm welcomes. I am rither sad tonight because i had to put her out of her pain it way way worse then I thought her tail was a bloody stump and the picking had gone all down her sides plus her full back, she was not walking either for either the pain or some other reason unknown I' ve never done such a thing but everyone who saw her thought it was best. Thank you again for all the replies. I wish am just sad tonight
