HELP!! CHICK ATTACKED BY DOG

Earlier today one of my month-old chicks was attacked by my dog. She survived but has a large wound on her belly that her organs are coming out of. There is also a second wound under her wing that is just on the surface. She’s standing up and seems alert, but I am insure of what to do to help. Is there any chance of survival? Or is it best to euthanize? Help!

Honestly, I think that it does sound like she/he must be suffering. There could be a chance of survival for the chick (maybe not though), you know your chick best. If you think that this chick could fight through and you want to take the chance, get that chick to a vet as soon as possible. If not, please put him/her out of her misery. I'm sorry this happened to you, it is so scary when something like that happens.

I think that because chickens are prey animals, they are amazingly resilient when it comes to external wounds. I am constantly amazed by threads on this forum where chickens bounce back after horrific injuries. If none of her internal organs are damaged and you keep the wounds clean and moist, she should hopefully be okay.

You might find this article helpful, though it recommends cleaning with peroxide and I’ve seen other people say that flushing with a saline solution is gentler and more effective.

**edit—I’m so sorry, the first time I read this I missed that her organs are exposed. How is she now? Can you post a picture of the extent of the damage?

hello, thank you for your reply. here is an image of her injury she is no longer responsive but still breathing. i feel awful for not knowing how to help her...

In this case with organs coming out already, I would end the suffering immediately.
