Someone gave me a chick to help today. They said that the chick should have had its leg removed the day it was born. Ive looked it up and found the bandaid method. My chick does not look like any of the chicks pictured in the instructions. The splayed leg is really big and she is holding her foot like a claw. Is it too late,or is this something else. They called it a splayed leg. She actually stood up after I put the bandaid on. Its a mess,I had to put 2 on at the same time. (no one to help me). Will she be OK?, Im assuming shes a week or two. what happens later on when the chick is left untreated with this problem? UPDATE-I dont think its a "splayed leg" I have been looking at pics on the internet and this looks broken instead. Any ideas?

Ok, i will post picture. But I dont think this is a splayed leg, It looks like its broken to me. I will take a picture when she wakes me up again. :/

Its the one thats all bent up. See how big her "knee" is, it also has a sore that you can see. I can get help tomorrow to take a better picture. Its 3:45 am and shes quieted down again after much comforting. I hope she sleeps late! Thank you for helping.

Ok, I gues no one knows what this is. Now ive noticed a black spot on the chicks foot. Looks like Bumble foot, but I was told that chicks cant get Bumblefoot. The other leg has splayed out now too, she is a mess.

I am so sorry no one has come up with help for your chick. It definitely is not splay leg. Probably either deformed at birth or broken. I do not know what to tell you to help. I have one that has a deformed foot. She has been able to get around fine--just slower than the others. I just keep an eye on her a little more than the others to make sure she is not in trouble. She will never free range. I try to keep her in a safe environment.

Unfortunately a lot of people have left BYC with the change over and are now using facebook.
Pre-changeover, a lot of helpful advice was always available. I have been helped several times and quickly. I am not sure of any other place to ask for help unless it might be a good idea to put a link to this thread on your state's thread in "Where am I, Where are you". Our state is very active although definitely not like before the change over. Good luck

I agree, I don't think it's splay leg. Could be vitamin deficiency - what is the chick eating?

It could be deformed or broken - does it seem to hurt the chick if you move the leg?

Can it get around and eat?
