I have a 22 week old hen who started laying a couple weeks ago. We had a very hot spell around 100 for a few days in a row and we had one pass away in her sleep. Right after that I noticed bloody stool so I started them on corid. This one has drank some of it but tonight she’s terrible looking. She’s got her mouth open and a huge water balloon crop. I’ve tried massaging it. Some air and some liquid has come up but still feels huge. I just laid her in her coop and she just fell to her side. What do I do?? So heartbreaking

When a crop is puffy like a water balloon, do not massage it because it can force crop contents back up into the airway and cause choking or aspiration. Recheck her crop early in the morning to see if has emptied overnight. If it is still full and like a water balloon, then I would give some electrolytes and get some miconazole or Monistat to give orally in case of a sour crop. If it has emptied give some electrolytes and some very watery feed. Here is a good article on crop problems:

Worms can also cause blood in droppings. Can you post a picture of the blood?

I did just assume they all have coccidiosis since there’s bloody and watery/mucousy poo and assuming that’s what took my other hen. I noticed my other hen keeping to herself one day but thought she was just a little broody. Next morning she was gone. And that’s when I started seeing more blood and more watery droppings. I don’t have any pics right now but I’ll take some tomorrow. A couple of them have just started laying so I really thought that’s all that was wrong with the first one that got sick. I have not dewormed them but we got them from rural king and I think they said they were dewormed. She’s acting like she won’t make it through the night.

Feed stores do not deworm chickens. Worming them with SafeGuard Liquid Goat Wormer 1/4 ml per pound of weight given for 5 consecutive days to each chicken will kill most worms. Using it once and again after 10 days will kill roundworms, a common cause of blood in droppings. It is okay to treat for coccidiosis with Corid and worm them at the same time. Be sure to use the dosage of Corid—2 tsp per gallon of the liquid, or 1.5 tsp per gallon of water for 5-7 days. The best way to get a diagnosis of what killed your latest chicken is to keep the body cold, and send it in to your state vet today for a necropsy. What state are you in? Here is a list of state vets to contact for a necropsy:

Here’s an image of their droppings.
