HELP! Computer pros!!!!!

This just happened to me today.

Lord knows I'm no computer guru, but I got it fixed using system restore. I started the computer in safe mode. To do that, just press F8 as it's starting. Then I chose "safe mode with command prompt" and typed in

%systemroot%/system32/restore/rstrui.exe

Chose the date that it offered me, which was late last night. It worked.

I think there's an easier way, also. Seems like in regular safe mode you are offered a chance go to system restore after you log in. But I'm not sure. I had a Troubleshooting Windows book in my lap, so I just typed in what it told me to.

I've been doing help desk at work in addition to other IT duties. We have antivirus on a firewall that prevents most stuff from coming in.

THE FIRST thing that I would try...if it is XP is a system restore to a week or month ago. You will not lose documents. If that doesn't work:

Avira Anti-Vir
Malwarebytes(which you already used)

Avira seems to get more adware than AVG, the last time I compared them, though I saved a laptop with AVG 5 years ago.

See what type of viruses there are and look them up on the net. Sometimes you need a specific virus fix, but you have to beware of some of those, too.

It can be quite the pain.

Good Luck

Thanks for more advice, it is still there... put things in the history like this;

I'll try to do the system restore, I'll have to go back to roughly Dec 30th to fix it...... I wanted to get an external drive and try to save whatever I caqn before I really do some damage and have to re-format.... I REALLY do not want to do that since all my stuff is on there......

Its really hard to say without seeing it but you should probably take it to some more knowledgeable about viruses and malware before you make it worse. The malware could have already infected your backup restore files thus rendering the virus/malware software useless without first deleting these files. Also you may have to stop the malware program from running before it can be removed. This will depend on how it was written and executed. Be very careful if you decide to move the files you want to save to a portable drive. The malware program may infect that drive also, then infect the next computer that you plug it in to. If Malwarebytes did nothing and you do indeed have a trojan, it may have to be manually removed.
