My daughter's pullet, (Grace), is about 3-4 months old. We bought her with three others who seem to be doing well. The second or third day we had her, noticed her eyes were surrounded by gnats, and had bubbles in them, as well as yellow-white-clear gunk. She has been like this for three days.

The gnats are gone or mostly gone now. Eating a little more now and drinking more now. More active. (Was very tired, lethargic?). She has been separated from the flock since I noticed this.

Idk what to do for her. I've been using cotton balls with water to clear out gunk, but it keeps coming back. I also have been putting a little sugar and acv in her water.

Does she need medicine?
Is this contagious?
She is so beautiful and will lay beautiful eggs and my daughter adores her, so I would love to save her.

Keeping the eyes cleared of pus and bubbles is a good idea. You can also flush the eyes with saline then use qtips to clear the pus out. You can apply some Vetericyn eye gel or Terramycin eye ointment in the eyes to see if that helps.

Eye infections (bubbles/mucous) can be from a number of things. Respiratory illness like Mycoplasma, Infectious Bronchitis or Coryza can be the cause, as well as infection from debris, environment, molds or injury. If you have a vet that can test a swab to see if it's bacterial or viral that can be helpful in determining the course of treatment.

Respiratory illnesses are generally considered contagious and would make the sick chick and those exposed carriers of the illness. Depending on your chicken keeping goals (selling chicks, hatching eggs, etc.) finding out the cause would be in order, you don't want to pass an illness forward.

Antibiotics can help with secondary infections from respiratory illness, so they may be in order after you have tried other courses of treatment. Offer her some poultry vitamins in her water and see that she is eating well.
