Help! Dog Attack.

I felt her legs up and down and they didn't feel warm or swollen, so we are good to go there. Perhaps I had better dose her up on some goldenseal again to make sure infection isn't setting in her back wounds. She acted a little lethargic today....maybe because of the cold, but just to be safe....

Nope. No sign of the dogs. My theory....since they came at Easter last year too....is that someone had family visiting them for Easter this year and last, and those people brought their dog and let it run around. Why else would it have happened at the exact same time of year? And if they lived nearby wouldn't they have come back more than once a year? I asked around the neighborhood, but no one knew of anyone with a dog like I described.

HEllo there my name is Simone and im all very new to this...so i thought id just jump on the end of this one and ask for some advice...oneof my girls was attacked on tuesday so we are on day 3 of recovery...she had a smallish hole in her neck wich at the time that is all i could see until my kids said what is all that blood running down your leg mum..so when i turned her around i saw a huge gash about the size of my fist on her rump. It had 2 teeth marks as such and alot of flesh missing..it was late so we put her in a cat cage with lots of warmth and just kept checking in on her with food and water wich she took..next day my hubby took he to the vet..she was running a bad temp and they put her on some anti inflametry and antibiotics..one vet was very positive told us that chickens are very tough buggers and the other was not so positve at all..so we are listening to the positive one!! She was very drowsy when she came home but laid a egg and was even more exhausted after that.. she tries to stand and will but for very short periods of time..she talks and talks to me but she always has and is eating well..i read that scrambled egg was good so im about to go and make some for her now..but my question is the smell of her wounds is very pungent..is this part of the healing or something i need to worry about...to describe it...it smells very gamey..if that makes any sense at all!!! anyway any advice help and cheerful ear would be great..cheers Simone..

Hey, Simone.

Jump on. If I were you I would try to rinse the wounds really well with warm water and soap....you could even give her a bath maybe....use baby shampoo perhaps. Then go to TSC or Big R and get Blue-Kote to spray on her wounds. It is some sort of antiseptic, I think. It will help the wounds heal. If you are into natural health, get some liquid goldenseal and put it in her scrambled eggs. It is a natural antibiotic and will fight off infection.
O...you will want to be careful with blue-kote....it stains like crazy, so wear old clothes and cover your head in case she shakes!

I have permanent purple stains on my hands from it. Also try to buy the aresol kind, not the pump. Easier to apply.
What I did with my girls is probably a little different than what most people would do. I brought them in right away and poured cleanser on the wounds, then sprayed them with Blue-Kote. The next day I gave them both bathes, which allowed me to see more wounds. I kept them inside in a cage and gave them filtered water and high nutrition feed. I fed them oatmeal with kefir mixed with b vitamins, goldenseal, and other nutrition. The first of the week I put them out in the coop in a cage. When the days are nice I let them out in a run for fresh air.

Hi Simone, I agree with everything Indigo says , they are tuff buggers and can come back for the most extreme wounds. The most important thing you need to be concerned about is infection, the vet gave a shot of antibiotic so hopefully that will keep it at bay. do wash her wounds out real good, did the vet cleanse her wounds out? Somrthing else that will help to heal is salt water, you can take a gallon of warm water and put a cup of salt in it to dissolve then soak her once a day. dry her real good afterwards then apply some type of wound care in the form of salve or spray. just make sure it doesn't have pain relief that ends in caine. and don't put her out with the rest of the flock till shes healed or they will peck her wounds and could even kill her. thats whats nice about the blue-kote it will not only help to heal but will disguise the wounds also. Like Indigo said what ever it touches will be purple so use caution when applying. It has a natural plant in it too. Sure hope your girl pulls through and please keep us updated on her progress.

My one girl still in limping today, but DH checked her out and she didn't seem to have any swelling or anything he could feel, so we wait. The other girl is getting antsy to get back with the others. She acts like she wants to be in with them all the time. I had let her out to free range with them, but she seemed so tired at the end of the day, I put her back in the cage and kept her with the limping one all day today. They had a fun day scratching around in the dirt in the run. I have to laugh tho, because they are right in front of the baby chicks...6 1/2 weeks old....and it drives the babies crazy that they can't get out and scratch with the two injured ones. They sit in front of the wire and cheep!

They are too small to go out tho....they would slip right thru the holes in the electric netting.
