Help dog has been sprayed by a skunk!!!!

Last year someone on the forum had a recipe for this don't remember the post but if you search for skunk deorderizer or something you may find it. I remember her dog had gotten sprayed.

just found the recipe it says
1 quart of 3% hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 tsp liquid soap
Mix and use immediately Keep out of eyes and ears. Rinse with water
double this for large dogs
Do not mix until you are ready to use You can not keep this mixture as it will explode

It has been so humid here these last couple of days that the smells seems to just stay.

here;s the thing
1 bottle of peroxide
1 large box of baking soda
3 tbsp of dawn dish soap
fill 2-3 gallons of warm water
and take dog to the bath tub and generously wash the fur with this till all the soapy water is gone
then rinse

we did this with a scottie and she was okay right after the washing

Imp- has never had to deal w/skunk

My dog had a serious skunk encounter years ago..........the smell would not go away. I bathed him with everything humanly possible and no luck. I shaved him (his summer haircut) and the smell went away. If your dog is a breed you can shave really short, it might be an idea.

This Is The One That Works for me too!!!! My dog was even sleeping in our room after he dried. Tomatoe Juice just does not get rid of the smell.

Skunk researchers use the one that has been mentioned. THere is a sulfur compound in the skunk spray called thiols. One quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, half a cup of baking soda, and a tablespoon of liquid dish soap. This changes the chemistry of the spray turning it odorless. This only works when applied to a surface affected, doesn't deodorise air etc. Can't remember where I got the info but I saved it in case of a dog getting it (or heaven forbid me!)

Forget the tomatoe juice and vinegar, that's old school. He he. We have lots of experience with dogs getting sprayed by skunks around here. The baking soda/peroxide/dish soap method is best. Keep out of eye and mouth though. Use Massengil for around the eyes, ears and mouth.

I have had MANY skunked dogs to deal with! Everything written here is accurate. One thing not mentioned - if you are desperate, near nausea from the smell and have nothing suggested in the house so far, i recommend doing a first pass with dish detergent and COLD water on the spot where they got sprayed (usually the face / head). do not use warm water, it spreads the skunky oils everyplace and stinks up the whole dog. it also sets the smell into the fur/skin and months later when the dog gets wet you will smell skunk. the dish liquid willl cut the oils. this will take the dog from horrible nausea level of stink to almost tolerable stink.

if dog just ran through your house but skunk did not spray the house, don't worry it will take a day or two to get most of the smell out. open all the windows!

of all the remedies listed I have found natures miracle to work the best. yes, a little pricey but the bad news is that dogs don't mind getting sprayed and they tend to become serial skunk chasers...meaning you might have to deal with this again!

good luck and sorry for your troubles! reminds me that i need to get ready for skunk season myself!

The baking soda peroxide mix works fine. As for tomato juice and vinegar, don't bother.
