I just got our chicks in the mail today and one of them (an easter egger) will not open her eyes. I tried to gently open them using a warm, wet paper towel (I thought they might be stuck shut) and found she is capable of opening them - but keeps them closed.
She is peeping (loudly!) and has had some water, but no food. She is walking around the brooder, but bumps into the walls, feeder and the other chicks.
I am worried that she might die (especially if she doesnt eat). Should I separate her from the rest of the flock? I dont want her to die and suffer a long, slow death (by starvation). What can I do?
Thanks for any advice you have for this first time chicken mama.

Do you have some chick electrolytes??? If not, put some sugar in the water...I can't remember how much...and get the chick to drink it. Make sure she is warm and has access to the food and water. Hopefully, the sugar/electrolytes will perk her up enough to give her a chance!

Wow. That was fast...I tried the sugar water...and HER EYES OPENED almost immediately! :) She had a few gulps of water, then walked over to the feeder and started eating!

Thank you all so much!! :)

Thanks again everyone! "Babs" is doing awesome now...she is happily hopping around the brooder with the rest of the chicks - both eyes open now.
Thanks for the helpful advice!
