Earlier this evening, I checked on my babies as always. I immediately noticed my gorgeous frizzle was barely moving. I thoroughly inspected her. I brought her inside to dropper-feed her electrolyte-infused water (made just for chickens).
She is eating and drinking, but she’s quite unsteady on her feet, and her eyes appear protruberant. She is about six months old, and has been vibrant and healthy until today. I found no signs of injury or anything out of the ordinary besides what I described above.
She is currently in a “brooder” (for lack of a better term) in my house so I can check on her throughout the night. I am terribly upset that this has happened, especially after such a lovely Valentine’s Day.
She is listless and completely unlike herself. Any advice is much-appreciated. Unfortunately, I cannot afford a vet trip, as a number of circumstances have rendered my finances unusually tight of late. Please do not lambast me for owning birds whilst being unable to afford vet trips. Typically I am able to do just that, but several events have made that impossible for the time being, and I’m already beating myself up for my inability to have her seen by a medical professional.
I am utterly baffled as to what would cause such a sudden onset. Plus she is the only bird affected. My birds are in a large enclosure (completely predator-proof, as much as anything can be). They have two very nice coops, perches, fresh water, high-quality food, and a wonderful, loving flock. Not to mention the unwavering attention of their adoring humans, of which they take full advantage.
Prayers, positive thoughts, etc would be very kind. Thank you all! View attachment 1265405 View attachment 1265405 View attachment 1265405

I'm sorry she is not doing well.

Can you post some more photos in natural lighting - especially the "protruberant" eyes?

With chickens it can be so many things. Has she started laying eggs yet?

Anything out of the ordinary with her poop - mucous, blood, odd color, etc.?

Being unbalanced could be related to the eyes if you feel like something is wrong with them. Have the eyes changed in color, is the iris pinpointed?

Do your best to keep her drinking. Electrolytes are fine for a day or 2, then switch to poultry vitamins for a couple of days. Check her crop to make sure it's emptying overnight, look for any signs of external parasites and consider having a fecal float to rule out worms and coccidiosis.

Sometimes if they are about to begin to lay, they can act out of sorts, but the eyes should not be effected. Eye issues can be nutritional (vitamins E & A) , environmental (ammonia), trauma related (head injury) and from certain diseases like Marek's, to name a few.

She just passed. I am devastated. She seemed to perk up for several days. I don’t know what happened, but I pray it isn’t contagious.

Do you have gnats where you live, at this time of year? I doubt it, but my Polish pullet died in a similar way after an extended period of days, after a plague of gnats sucked her blood and probably drained her. She was weak, listless, and died, but did perk up for a little while just before death. So sorry for your loss. It is always hard when a favorite hen dies
:(
