Help? Egg bound? Sick? Not sure what's going on

No advice--I'm too new and haven't had any health issues with my girls--but I wanted to say I am sorry for your loss.

I just checked her body, her crop seems fine

The symptoms listed on that page didn't seem to match my girls', nor did some other info I checked. Poor thing, I've had her since she was hatched

I'm very sad.

thank you. I feel like I must have done something wrong, didn't catch whatever was wrong soon enough, i wonder if maybe she ate something poisonous or something, it happened so fast....

Are there any Universities near?

I hear they will do a necropsy(sp?) for free/the education of it. Perhaps then you could find out what it was that happened?

I'm always at a loss for words at this kinda stuff so:

Actually I was considering doing a necropsy myself. I'm a recreation/fish/wildlife tecnician, and in our wildlife class last year they taught us how to do necropsies. only thing is, I'm not sure what to look for other than perhaps a better look at the crop, check the stomach and see if she ate anything strange, and check the vent and see if there was some sort of blockage.

hi turrelle...first off I am sorry for your loss....I just wanted to explain the bump thing...I noticed on this post you seemed a little confused about it...when some one gives you a bump in this sort of situation it is to keep your post at the top of the list so that more people see it so that they can help so that you dont get burried back on page 20 something...so a bump is a good thing .....sometimes the reason for the illness is right under our nose so I would try doing a search of the enviroment first..poison plants could a neighbour have used a weed killer?...bug killer? this may be a secondary poisoning..please keep us posted as to your findings....

o one more thing...welcome!!!!

I have a feeling that you did nothing wrong, sometime we just lose them and never find an exact cause. When they show signs quickly like your hen did, I have found it is usually less than 18 hours and they are gone. They sometimes don't give us enough symptoms to even try to make a good guess.

If you are comfortable doing the necropsy, it would probably give you a good foundation for later ones. She might have become an internal layer, but that is just a guess.

I have found the clean fluid to be very common at or just before they die. Usually occurs along with that slight clicking sound in their breathing.

I'm sorry you lost your girl.

It's so hard when the symptoms could be indicative of so many things. I hope you will be able to find out what went wrong.

I understand your anguish. A few weeks ago I lost Annie, a delightful hen who loved life and was a total sweetie. She was the picture of health, or so it seemed. I came home from work one day and let she and her roo friend out to free range and I noticed she hadn't laid an egg yet that day (she typically laid an egg every 2 days and she was due that day but it was only a few hours "late" - I didn't fret much right away because she had never had any apparent laying issues - all eggs came out perfect). She and BJ ran off to explore and a few minutes later I went to check on them and she was sitting beneath a shrub looking like she was going to lay an egg. I gave her 2 minutes to herself so she could relax as much as possible and I no sooner did that when I heard terrible flapping and thumping sounds and her roo buddy wailing. I flew out the door to her and she was dead, belly up. She wasn't even 2 years old. Robbed, poor Annie. I'm gathering she had a heart attack. This was a total surprise because she always seemed so energetic and joyful. Haunted by seeing her look at me through their run that morning, her standing on a little bench - first time ever - and really really looking at me. I didn't want to go to work and I wish I hadn't because I would have been able to see that she probably struggled all day to lay an egg and I would have intervened. With little white, you knew something was wrong a little sooner than I did yet her problem was so mysterious that you were left just as helpless as I. I am really really sorry.

Hi, thank you for your condolences. I am aware actually of what bump means, I was bumping it too in the hopes that someone could help quicker too

We don't have any neighbors for quite a ways away, we have a very large property and they only range on ours. We do not use herbicides or pesticides on our plants, we deter weeds only by cutting and pulling. I'm going to keep an eye on the other chickens closely for the next couple of days, and I will keep them confined to the run to ensure no further exposure if that is what it was.

my poor girl.
