Recently I’ve gotten me and my family some new baby chicks. We diceded to put them in a big coop that we bought online. Our area has some raccoon problems, so I dicided to open up the chicken coop overnight so the raccoons and the chickens could get to know each other better and the raccoons could leave them alone because they know them. The first time this happened, all the chickens were killed. I tried it again afterwards with new chickens and some of them weren’t killed so I know that it is working. I think I just need to do it a third or fourth time and the raccoons will leave them alone afterwards. The only problem is the chicks are expensive and my kids have been really upset about the first two incidents. I don’t know if they can stand another one. Do you have tips for how to get the befriending process to be faster? Also my kids are really upset about it and I want to know some ideas to get them to stop. I already tried punishing them but it didn’t work. Thank you! -The Smith Family Mom

They won't "get to know each other." You're putting a favorite prey of raccoons right in front of them... this is like dangling bacon in my face and telling me not to eat it.

Do NOT get chickens if you're not going to predator proof and protect them. Birds of prey, weasels, dogs, raccoons, bears, large cats... they'll all eat them. Chicks can even be eaten by rats or crows.

Then how come the second time some of them survived?

They got lucky. Coons might've had their fill, got distracted, etc.

I think you need to do a lot more research on all the types of chicken predators before you continue to put yourself through heartbreak. What you're trying to do is "make friends" with raccoons - what you're actually doing is teaching the raccoons where easy food is so they can come back with more friends and raid it whenever they wish.

Ok I’ll try it one more time and if it doesn’t work i’ll figure it out from there.

Is this for real?

Basically you are just buying food for the raccoons. Why would you "try again"?
