I have a bantam that is holding her head to one side. It started with a sticky eye which I have been treating with a mild antibiotic eye drop. The eye is stuck in the morning and when it does open it exudes milky tear drops. Even with the eye open she walks with her head severely to one side and goes around in circles poor girl.. There is no nasal discharge and she is eating and drinking. She has not started to lay yet following the winter. Probably got too much going on with her head. Does anyone have any ideas? Could it be an ear infection? She's not being picked as she is still queen hen of the coop despite the problem.

Welcome to BYC. Where are you located (country?) It sounds like your chicken has both wry neck and a respiratory disease. Infectious coryza can cause sticky discharge from the eye, but it could be another disease since respiratory diseases have many similar symptoms. The wry neck is a little disturbing. Wry neck can be a symptom of vitamin deficiency, a head or neck injury, or from a virus such as Mareks disease or Newcastles and others. I would isolate this chicken away from others, using biosecurity measures, and start her on vitamins in her water. Most respiratory diseases are chronic and make carriers of a flock. Culling is the best method to control the spread. Here is a link to common respiratory diseases with symptoms, and some links about wry or crook neck:

Hi thanks for getting back to me. I am located in London, England. I will have a look at the websites thanks. The girls do have a mineral supplement (daily), apple cider vinegar and garlic in addition to their layers pellets. I also give them a handful of mixed corn and dried mealworms in the afternoon. Should they be having the corn? I'll start on the vitamins in the water.

I have had four cases of wry neck in my flock and was able to cure all four completely by following Alan Stanford treatment plan for wry neck. You can find his treatment plan by going to browneggblueegg.com, then look in articles, then go to crook neck. I've followed this treatment to a tee with great success. Basically it requires giving vitamin E, vitamin B, polyvisol liquid children's vitamin without iron, small amounts of selenium (large amounts can be toxic but selenium is necessary for the absorption of vitamin E) and predinsone. You can do the treatment without the predinsone but with all my cases I used it because they were severe cases. The schedules and amounts can be found on the article I've directed you too. Main thing with wry neck is it requires patients on your part. It will take a full month for complete recovery. So don't give up and keep that in mind. Best wishes and I hope this helps. She may need help drinking and eating during this time depending on the severity of her wry neck. If you have any questions I'd be happy to help. Just message me. Don't get discouraged you can do this! It just takes some time. Good luck and God bless
